From intern to my full-time professional role

By Jing Beh

It has been a year since I first joined Palin Communications as an intern, and I never imagined the impact the experience would have on my career. As someone from Singapore, what started as an opportunity to gain practical experience in health-focused public relations and to learn more about the media landscape in Australia, it has since evolved into a full-time role that I am incredibly proud to part of.

Graduated with a Master of Strategic Public Relations

Looking back, here are my three takeaways that I’ve learned along the way, and hopefully it can offer a glimpse into what it’s like to work in the field of health PR.

1. A space to make a difference

I had the opportunity to work across various disease awareness campaigns, and it has been deeply rewarding. Knowing that our efforts contribute to raising awareness about critical health issues and empowering communities makes every project feel purposeful.

2. Meeting diverse stakeholders

In health PR, I’ve had the opportunity to meet with a wide range of stakeholders – patient groups, doctors, pharmacists, and the media. Each group has its own needs and perspectives, and navigating these relationships has taught me the importance of empathy and understanding.

3. Never-ending learning and growth

As an intern, I was focused on absorbing all the knowledge, and taking on small tasks to refine my skills. Now, as a full-time team member, I have the chance to take on greater responsibilities and contribute to the overall team strategy. There’s never a dull moment working in health PR.

If you’re considering a career in this space, I encourage you to embrace every opportunity to learn, be open to challenges, and never underestimate the power of sensitive and compassionate communication.
